We are under grace or law? Which is true?

Statement: We are under grace not the law.

We are under grace and tradition tells us that the law was “nailed to the cross” and that we are sanctified by the Word of God.  Preachers and teachers in our Churches say that the law was done away with by the finished works of Jesus (Yeshua) at Calvary ad it is grace that prevails.

Recently we heard “the more sanctified we are the less we need the law. The law is for the lawless.” – Stan P.

So what is the truth behind the law?  The Bible defines sin as lawlessness.  So then to sin is to be without the law, right?  The law seems to define what sin is.  Then a logical conclusion would be that Jesus (Yeshua) took sin away and nailed it to the cross, so therefore we can no longer sin, being free to do anything we wish!  Being sanctified by the Word of God, I can lie, cheat and steal without any problems because I am sanctified by God’s Word and the more I read it the less I need the law.  Sounds funny to me.  What is the law then?

Again the Bible has a definition for us to follow.  The word “law” is written as Torah in the original text.  The word is defined as instruction.  So therefore it would seem to be best described as instruction(s) instead of law.  Now this makes perfect sense, these are the instructions that the Bible explains how we should conduct our lives in a holy manner.

Hebrews has something to say:  “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.” (Rom 7:7 KJV) or “What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “YOU SHALL NOT COVET.”” (Rom 7:7 NASB)
