Paul warned Timothy—and us—that a time would come when people stop putting up with sound teaching.
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound teaching. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”
(2 Timothy 4:3)
This time is here.
Many churches today emphasize messages that feel comfortable and affirming, often softening or skipping parts of Scripture that challenge popular culture or personal preferences. This shift may draw more people in at first, but it risks moving away from the life-changing truth that Paul calls “sound doctrine.”
What Is Sound Doctrine?
Paul used two Greek words to describe the kind of teaching believers should hold to:
- “Sound” (hugiaino) means healthy, whole, life-giving
- “Doctrine” (didaskalia) means teaching or instruction
Sound doctrine builds faith that stands strong in hardship. It calls believers to obey Yeshua’s commands, live with repentance, and follow the whole counsel of Scripture.
How Does the Church Trade Truth for Comfort?
Here are some ways churches may compromise sound doctrine for comfort:
- Downplaying repentance
Some messages focus on grace but avoid calling for true repentance or change, making faith seem easier but less transformative. - Minimizing obedience
Preaching love without calling for obedience to God’s commands can lead to a shallow faith. - Ignoring difficult Scriptures
Passages about holiness, judgment, or Torah obedience sometimes get overlooked or reinterpreted to avoid offending. - Favoring popular teachers over Scripture
When sermons rely more on celebrity pastors or self-help authors than on the Bible itself, teaching can drift.
What Did Yeshua Teach?
Yeshua came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, not abolish them.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
(Matthew 5:17)
After His resurrection, Yeshua explained everything to two discouraged disciples by starting with Moses and the Prophets.
“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.”
(Luke 24:27)
This teaches us to test every message by Scripture, not cultural trends.
How Can You Stay Grounded?
You don’t have to guess. Here are practical steps:
- Read and study Scripture daily
Focus on the whole Bible, including Torah and Prophets, to see the full picture Yeshua lived by. - Test teachings against the Bible
Like the Bereans, check if sermons and books line up with Scripture (Acts 17:11). - Look for churches that teach obedience and repentance
Healthy fellowships don’t just talk about grace; they call believers to follow God’s commands in love. - Ask questions
Don’t settle for easy answers. Seek clarity and biblical truth, even when it challenges.
Finding a Fellowship That Teaches Sound Doctrine
Community matters. Scripture encourages believers to meet regularly and encourage one another.
“Let us not give up meeting together… but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
(Hebrews 10:25)
When looking for a church or group, consider these signs:
- They teach from the whole Bible, not just the New Testament.
- They encourage repentance and obedience, not just belief or comfort.
- They welcome questions and are willing to test traditions against Scripture.
- They focus on Yeshua as the Word made flesh, not personalities or programs.
If you can’t find a local fellowship like this, start a small group or connect online. Walking in truth is the goal—not perfection.
Encouragement for the Journey
If you feel unsure about what to believe or where to gather, you’re not alone. Many believers wrestle with these questions. The good news is that sound doctrine remains available.
Return to Scripture, test what you hear, and seek out those who will walk with you in faithfulness. Yeshua’s teaching leads to life, health, and strength—if we hold to it.
A Simple Prayer
Father, help us love truth more than comfort. Teach us to test what we hear by Your Word. Lead us to follow Your Son faithfully, living out Your commands with joy. Amen.
